Wow... so apparently Mecklenburg County, and the rest of North Carolina are issuing a "stay-at-home" order to help combat the spread of the Covid-19 virus. Well, if it's true we are going to need to squeeze in a camping trip one last time before we have to lock the doors. Better call some friends!
We loaded up "Oscar Mike" and spent the weekend at our favorite local state park. This is our go to park for one of two reasons. Reason one, it's only 35 minutes away and#2 they offer large group primitive sites which can sleep up to 60 people, which is just big enough for the two of us and Scout of course. She is able to run and run and run and run, she loves it!
We stopped in town on the way up and grabbed Subway for dinner and then cook meals on Saturday and Sunday. I love to cook over a fire with cast iron gear. Great now I'm hungry just thinking about it.
Saturday breakfast is eggs, bacon and sausage with toast. Lunch is something quick because we like to hike around the park around noon, usually sandwiches. Now dinner is the real meal. It varies but this time we did Jim's famous meat loaf in the dutch oven with all the fixings like potatoes, carrots and celery. After our meat comma passed, we had a dutch oven Cherry Sundrop cobbler for desert. We sat around the camp fire regretting all that food we ate and just enjoyed each other's company. Colt loves to have "cracker barrel" before bed. If you are unfamiliar, it is a tradition I introduced him to that I learned in Boy Scouts and still practice with our Scouts. The leaders bring a snack for the boys to eat around the campfire at night. This kind of calms everyone down and subconsciously prepares them for lights out. Anyways, Colt likes to have sliced summer sausage on Ritz crackers topped off by a can of cheese, so that's what we do on every camping trip. No matter if it's "Cadillac Camping" in Oscar Mike or if we are back packing on the Appalachian Trail, I will have cracker barrel for all to enjoy!
We got up Sunday and ate pancakes, broke down camp did a couple trash sweeps because you always leave your area better than you found it. After all that, we came home.
